"creating jobs for individuals with varying levels of skill and education (hospitality, healthcare, construction and high-tech)"

I am curious about the top brass of this business. Will the CEO, CFO, COO, management and administrative staff live here? How does that economic model work? I get that the server at the sandwich shop will have more customers and the bellhop bags to ferry -- more tips, but who will run this Medmart and make the 6 digits? How many jobs for Cleveland professionals will actually be in-house and ongoing at the Medmart itself? Does the profit go to Merchandise Mart in Chicago or to Cleveland? This has been confusing to me all along. Did I miss the post that had the human resources plan? And do we expect that major medical vendors will move staff to Cleveland permanently to staff their exhibits?

The Medical Mart Blog was created to help educate the community on Medical Mart that we're trying to attract to Cleveland.

This blog, as our the profile clearly states, is being maintained by the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Partnership. We even go a step further and sign our blog entries so that readers know precisely who has posted a particular entry.

We encourage comments. We've received questions, feedback and suggestions from commenters. And we've been responsive to them. We also have the website www.AShotInTheArm.org that also has updated information about the Medical Mart.

The tax increase will enable the county to construct a long-needed convention center. The investment of the residents in the convention center is what will attract outside investors, like Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., to invest in Cleveland. This is our "something else". We're building on our strengths in healthcare and biotechnology and we're attracting new money from investors and visitors, which will create jobs.

TAX! TAX! TAX! The people are tired of it. Let's try and think of more creative ways to come up with this money. To start why does the city of Cleveland have 20 some city council men and other larger cities have less. I think Detroit only has 9. That is just one example on how money is well wasted in the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. I agree it will help out NE Ohio greatly to have a Medical Mart. NE Ohio should be the medical capital of the world since we do have some of the best hospitals in the world. We need to bring people back here and create more jobs. Large industry is gone, NE Ohio needs something else. The Rock Hall and the pro sports is not enough to drive the city.

Jeff-
The location hasn't been selected. Decisions on location will be examined with the production of the business plan. The CVB and CFA have commissioned numerous studies that look at potential sites and Tower City was one of the options from those studies, which is the reason it is sometimes cited in this discussion. Tower City, because of its physical connection to a number of hotels, restaurants and the Rapid, is a viable choice and could end up being the location when the decision is made based on sound business principles.

The CVB has also done extensive research about the current convention center facility. Have you ever been in it? It's a beautiful facility, but it's by no means on par with modern facilities in other comparable cities. Built in 1922, it's one of the oldest convetion centers in the country. It's underground and does not allow for cellphone reception. The exhibit space has low ceilings and many columns (modern facilties have high ceilings and few columns). Our website http://www.travelcleveland.com/medicalmart/people_are_saying has a number of letters from (a few of the hundreds that have been receieved over the years) from meeting planners explaining why the Cleveland Convention Center is not adequate for modern meetings.

If a new convention center were built in Cleveland, the current center would be given new life by groups interested in using the public theater and other spaces for offices.

Why does the location have to be at Tower City? Its like raising the tax to award Forest City for poorly managing this asset.

A location near the current convention center would be better...on the land owned by the county (current county admin building)

Why not use historic tax credits to update the current convention center?

[...] If you take the increment on the bed tax that the commissioners can levy, which is 2%, in today’s world that will get you about $5 million a year. You have $5 million versus a sales tax at $42 million. They could take a look at the real estate conveyance fee which generates significant money but I believe that source is in the teens. [...]

Hello Carole,

Unfortunately, private money does not work because convention centers traditionally don’t turn a profit, the business they generate benefits the local economy, not necessarily the convention center itself.

More information on this is available at: http://www.hotel-online.com/Neo/Trends/ERA/ERAImpactConventionCenters.html#4.

Additional funding sources have been examined, you can read more details at http://clevelandmedicalmart.wordpress.com/2007/07/19/the-alternatives-dont-add-up/.
